1. Make it cool
The most obvious starting point is to make computers look cool. Instead of a boring old laptop or PC, you should invest in something more outlandish, like a PC case for games. Something with a bit of style and maybe some flashing lights. You want to get your child excited about computers and make them curious about them. Gray boxes and spreadsheets are clearly not the way to do it. Think sideways and draw them in inorganically.
2. Content is important
We have all seen how cumbersome it is when grandparents or older people want to use a computer. It looks like they’re dealing with something totally foreign, and the truth is that they are. These elderly people have only been introduced to computers in later life, and as such, they are not properly wired up to use the platform.
So once again, if you want to make sure that this doesn’t happen to your own kids, you need to make sure that your child feels comfortable behind a keyboard from the earliest possible age. Set them up so they can play age-appropriate games or watch videos or content. This demystifies the computer, and before you know it, they’ll start controlling the device themselves and start asking next-level questions that even you can’t answer.
3. Use it yourself
When they are still small children, they watch what their parents do and they copy them. This is one of the basics of learning. If you do not use the computer much, or even worse, if you seem to be afraid of it and do not feel comfortable around it, your child will pick up on this. So make sure that you use the computer in their presence and that they see how you look happy and productive behind the keyboard.
You may not be doing particularly interesting things on your computer, but you should still involve them. Share the wonder of the Internet with them or spend some time talking about a YouTube video. Whatever it is, make sure you send them the right messages that underline the path they should take.
